Oman edge Sri Lanka for second successive victory in Dhaka

man thwarted a spirited fightback by Sri Lanka for their second successive victory in the ongoing qualifying tournament for the Asian Games hockey competition in Dhaka On Monday.

According to information received here from the Bangladeshi capital, Oman defeated the team from the island nation by a 3-2 margin in a crucial Pool A game played at the the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium.

According to the news posted on the Bangladesh Hockey Federation's website, Oman took the lead in the 12th minute though their second penalty corner with Rajab Basim Khatar sounding the boards after Younis Al Nofli's push was stopped by Khalfan Qasim.

Sri Lanka, however, equalised in the 28th minute as Lahiru Gihan Weerasooriya, producing a brilliant stickwork on the right flank, beat the onrushing Omani goalie Fahad Khamis with an angular hit. 

Oman regained their lead in the 45th minute through their in-form forward Mahmood Ashoor Ramadhan who dragged a penalty corner into the left hand post of Sri Lankan goalie Darsana Ratnasiri.

Ramadhan repeated act in the 50th minute with another efficient drag off a penalty corner.

Sri Lanka tried hard and Lahiru Gihan Weersooriya again struck in the 63rd minute as his timely deflection on a Tharanga Gunawardana hit  crashed into the post.

Oman beat Chinese Taipei 1-0 in their first match while Sri Lanka was held to a 1-1 draw by Qatar in their first encounter.

Oman play their next match against Qatar on Wednesday when Sri Lanka take on Chinese Taipei.
