COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2014 HOCKEY DRAW

Monday, 21 October 2013 10:34
Malaysia had mixed fortunes when the draws and fixtures of the 2014 Commonwealth Games hockey competition were released.

The men weredrawn in Pool B together with the likes of England, Trinidad & Tobago, New Zealand and Canada thus avoiding big guns Australia and India who are grouped together with Scotland, Wales and South Africa.

But the women have a tough task ahead of them as they will be up against Australia, England, Wales and Scotland in Pool B. The other pool comprises of South Africa, Trinidad & Tobago, India,Canada and New Zealand.

“The groups look fairly even to be honest. There is no "easier" game at all for either pool for teams like Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, Wales and the hosts Scotland,” said national coach Paul Revington when contacted in Perth where the national team is participating in the Super 9’s tournament.

“The CWG's will be the "major" event for 2014 so everyone should expect further competition from these countries - making it a highly competitive CWG's.”

The men’s team won silver at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur where hockey made its debut. And in Melbourne in 2006 Malaysia were on the podium with a bronze. Australia won the gold in all the four editions contested thus far.
